Cognitive psychologists address this question by studying different kinds of mental functions. Some of these functions are considered basic and include perception, attention and memory. Recent technical developments have enabled psychologists to explore how cognitive functions are represented in the brain. Techniques have been developed that track the activity of brain areas across time and that influence brain activity. This allows insights into how the mind encodes, represents, retrieves and manipulates information and helps psychologists formulate theories that enable us to dynamically predict mental and behavioral outcomes.
