Research Interests

My research program on the psychology of aging aims at "adding life to years" in this era of population aging where "years are added to life." My research interests lie in studying how goals change across adulthood in different cross-cultural contexts, and their impacts on social relationships, emotional regulation, and cognition. My theory, called “Aging in Culture,” argues that aging is not defined by a particular pattern of behaviors. To the extent that people from different cultural contexts perceive different goals as emotionally meaningful, their particular patterns of aging will differ. This theory has been tested and supported in the areas of age-related personality, social relationships and social cognition (attention and memory).
